So what’s next for exfoliation? The latest buzzword is hydradermabrasion which uses water instead of crystals to blast the skin to remove dead skin cells.
Unlike microdermabrasion which is in effect, sandblasting the skin, the Jet-M Hydrodermabrasion uses water instead of crystals. A highly pressurized oxygen jet sends micro-droplets of water onto the skin at an almost supersonic rate, through a hand held nozzle. The water blasts the skin – this feels incredibly cooling – which gently exfoliates the top layers, removing dead skin cells, but the oxygen also penetrates the skin adding even more benefits. On top of that, added ingredients such as vitamins can be added to the water. There is no pain and no downtime. From £80 per session.
The HydraFacial is one of the newest advances in skin resurfacing and exfoliating, and is the only hydrodermabrasion treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, smoother, and younger looking skin with no discomfort or downtime. The treatment is soothing, moisturizing, non-invasive and non-irritating, which means that it is suitable for all skin types.
Although in some eyes it’s not strictly an exfoliator, the new Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System, from £150 produces very similar results to exfoliating. Loved by a host of A-list celebrities include Cameron Diaz, Madonna, Jessica Alba, and even Justin Timberlake, the Clarisonic exfoliates without abrasion or chemicals, and is so gentle on the skin that it can be used twice a day. While it may look like a large face brush, it actually uses a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second, to lift off dirt, grime and dead skin cells, allowing your skin to absorb skincare products much more effectively.
