Dermal fillers are used to fill and plump out the crevices in the skin caused by loss of volume as we age. The suppleness and tone of the skin is instantly restored, with lines and wrinkles visibly reduced from the very first treatment. The number of treatment you require depends on the type of filler used. This month Dr Nick Lowe shows us just how effective fillers in the nasolabial folds can be. He uses Juvederm products for the treatment.
The Treatment:
Most ‘dermal fillers’ are now based on hyaluronic acid, a gel-like, transparent substance that is naturally present in the skin and contributes to plumping up the skin cells. Like collagen, hyaluronic acid depletes as we age, and by the time we reach our 50s, 50% of our hyaluronic acid has gone. Facial fillers use a synthetic, biodegradable version which attracts water in the skin and plumps it up. It also stimulates the production of the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid as well as collagen.
A mild anaesthetic cream is usually applied to the skin before the treatment to numb the area. The fillers are injected directly into the the skin beneath the wrinkle using a very fine needle. Any pain or discomfort is minimal. The treatment session lasts for 20-40 minutes, depending on the number of lines and wrinkles.

Cost:
One injection of filler costs around £350. The number of injections you need will depend on the depth of the lines and wrinkles in this area.
Fillers can last anywhere between 12 -18 months. The more regularly you have fillers, the less you should need each visit, due to the natural collagen stimulation they produce.
